Curaçao Film Liga keeps exceptional cinema alive in Curaçao

Entertainment | By Press release January 8, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao Film Liga officially kicks off a new year of cinema that goes beyond the mainstream.

Curaçao Film Liga originated in 2017, sparked by an enthusiastic group of attendees at the Curaçao International Film Festival who shared a love for exceptional cinema and a desire to experience it beyond the festival period. What began as a shared idea grew into a year-round initiative focused on keeping film as an art form alive, accessible, and relevant throughout the year.

At its core, Curaçao Film Liga aims to strengthen film culture on the island by offering more than just screenings. The Liga creates space for meaningful stories, conversation, and a deeper appreciation of cinema and the people behind it.

Curaçao Film Liga works closely with The Movies Curaçao, which is currently testing several new titles and expanding its offer to include more diverse and unconventional films. This collaboration reflects a shared ambition to broaden the cinematic landscape on the island and make room for stories that are not always given a platform.

The new season opens on January 8 with All That Is Left of You, a Palestinian film directed by a Cherien Dabis and performed by a strong ensemble cast. The film follows one family across seven decades, from the 1948 Nakba to the early 2020s, as seen through the eyes of a mother. The story explores themes of displacement, identity, memory, and resilience, with a focus on the personal consequences of historical events. In today’s global and political climate, the film feels both timely and necessary.

Movies are powerful storytelling tools that hold up a mirror to society. With this new season, Curaçao Film Liga reaffirms its belief in cinema as art, conversation, and a shared cultural experience.

Curaçao Film Liga operates through a membership model, offering audiences the opportunity to attend one curated arthouse screening per month. Membership information, screening dates, and upcoming titles can be found on the Curaçao Film Liga website. www.curacaofilmliga.com
