Unity and Festive Atmosphere Shine at “Taste of Suriname Curaçao”

WILLEMSTAD - The event “Taste of Suriname Curaçao – 50 Years Srefidensi,” held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, was an overwhelming success. The JPF grounds at Plantersrust transformed into a vibrant celebration of culture and culinary delights, highlighting the warm and enduring bond between Suriname and Curaçao.

Organized by Surinam Airways and the JPF Association, the event marked one of the first major festivities leading up to the 50th anniversary of Suriname’s independence on November 25.

This year’s Srefidensi celebration is a historic milestone—50 years since Suriname declared itself an independent nation. It represents five decades of self-determination, cultural pride, and nation-building. For Surinamese people worldwide, Srefidensi remains a powerful symbol of identity and unity. Throughout the week, Surinamese communities across the diaspora celebrated the 50-year anniversary, including right here in Curaçao.

Dignitaries and Special Guests

The official ceremony was attended by representatives who highlighted the significance of the Suriname–Curaçao relationship.

Guests were especially honored by the presence of the Surinamese consular delegation. The delegation—Consul General (ad interim) Angela Khoesial and Vice Consul Randall Naarendorp—brought an official touch to the celebration. In her remarks, Ms. Khoesial underscored the profound meaning of 50 years of Srefidensi.

Event organizers, representing Surinam Airways and the JPF Association, also addressed the audience, emphasizing their mission to strengthen cultural and economic ties between both communities.

Music, Dance, and Culinary Delight

After the official program, the festivities erupted into an atmosphere filled with Surinamese warmth and joy. Local band MOXI electrified the crowd with a blend of Surinamese and Caribbean rhythms.

One of the standout performances was the spectacular dance show by Di Art, followed by a high-energy Brassband that perfectly showcased the richness and diversity of Surinamese culture.

Visitors were treated to the full range of Surinamese culinary treasures — from classics like pom and roti to other beloved dishes that highlighted the depth of Suriname’s gastronomic heritage. The sense of togetherness reached its peak during a lively community game that brought everyone closer.

A Successful Mission of Connection

The strong turnout, including a delegation of Surinamese and local entrepreneurs, reaffirmed the organizers’ goal of strengthening cultural and economic ties while ushering in the Srefidensi celebrations early. The evening concluded with the JPF raffle draw and the awarding of prizes to the lucky winners.

With this successful event, Surinam Airways and the JPF Association have set the tone for continued cooperation and a warm lead-up to the main Srefidensi celebration on November 25.
