WILLEMSTAD - In 2019, almost 1.5 billion guilders in taxes were collected in Curaçao, namely 1,486 million guilders. That is more than in previous years. The waste tax and license fees have not yet been included.
The figures can be read in the recently released 2019 annual report of Tax Accountants Bureau, better known as SBAB. That foundation completed considerably fewer financial administration inspections at companies last year. This is due to a lack of financial resources, due to government cutbacks. But the fire that destroyed the tax office has also made things more difficult.
The annual report also states that the intention was to conduct a total of 470 inspections in 2019. However, only 389 have been completed. In comparison, 668 such inspections were conducted in 2018. In 2008, even 736 inspections were carried out.
SBAB is financially dependent on the government, but due to the cutbacks there is also less money available for the tax accountants. For example, SBAB received more than 11.4 million guilders last year, while the proposed budget was almost 19.5 million.
