Local | By Correspondent August 16, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - Friday, August 16, the Court of First Instance, in accordance with the demand of the public prosecutor, the accused A.A.O. was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with deduction of pre-trial detention, for double murder and attempted murder.

The Court considers it proven that the suspect acted with premeditation on 23 May 2018 when he brutally killed two young men aged 19 and 23 and tried to kill a third man of 26 years.

The Court of First Instance ruled that the suspect stormed on the victims in a very cold-blooded and calculating way with a shotgun and then shot them from a short distance and in a targeted manner. All three victims were shot in the chest and one was also shot in the head. The victim who survived this attack suffered life-threatening injuries. After a long-term medical treatment in Colombia, he is still experiencing severe physical limitations that he will have to  cope with throughout his life.

The suspect has also been guilty of forbidden possession of weapons. In the view of the Court of First Instance, it goes without saying that the possession of firearms in a society that is becoming increasingly violent is totally unacceptable. In this case it has again become painfully clear to what very serious consequences the possession of firearms can lead to.

In the view of the Court of First Instance, in view of the seriousness of the evidence stated, it is not sufficient to impose a different or lighter sanction than a punishment that entails a very long-term unconditional detention.

Furthermore, the suspect must pay a total of NAf 56,000 in damages to the surviving victim and to the relatives of the two fatalities.
