WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao will not introduce a so-called solidarity tax. That has been announced by Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath. The Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten had previously announced that the introduction of additional tax would be negative for the economy and could lead to a decline in prosperity. The International Monetary Fund has also given negative advice, according to the government.
The tax was an idea of the Minister of Finance Kenneth Gijsbertha and aimed to get more funds for the government, which is having financial problems due to the corona crisis. The tax would mean an increase of 5 to 10 percent for people with an average income and higher. The government is now considering introducing additional indirect taxes.
