Air quality Julianadorp no cause for concern

Local | By Correspondent July 11, 2022

THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - The air quality in the Julianadorp area is better than the air quality measured at other measurement locations of the Dutch Public Health Department in Amsterdam. This is stated by State Secretary for Defense Christophe van der Maat (VVD) in a letter to the Dutch House of Representatives.

In the letter, the State Secretary informs the House about, among other things, the air quality measurements in Curaçao. Parliament drew attention to the air quality around the Schottegat, because many Defense personnel live in Julianadorp and could possibly suffer health problems as a result.

The measurements show that in the period from 2016 to 2020 the concentrations of SO2, nickel and vanadium have decreased significantly. Other components have decreased less or not at all, but are lower than at the other two measurement locations on the island.

According to the State Secretary, the measurement results in Julianadorp do not give cause for concern. “The air quality is not exceptional when compared with the Netherlands,” says Van der Maat. “Continuing the measurements in Julianadorp does not seem necessary to get a better picture of the air quality. Based on this conclusion, I have decided to terminate the assignment to the GGD Amsterdam.”
