WILLEMSTAD - The foreigners' barracks at the prison Sentro di Detenshon i Korekshon Kòrsou (SDKK) are permanently closed. The prison received a lot of international criticism for the way the undocumented migrants are treated.
According to Human Rights Defense Curaçao (HRDC), the criticism arose after the Committee against Torture (CAT) recently came to inspect the barracks for foreigners. The eight Venezuelan migrants have now been transferred to Block 1 of the prison, which also houses criminals. According to HRDC, this is a violation of human rights.
The human rights organization wants the undocumented to be released and then report to the immigration police. The Minister of Justice still has to decide on the refugee status of the eight Venezuelans.
Work is currently underway on a new building to accommodate the undocumented migrants while awaiting deportation.
