Aqualectra Projects Major Shift to Renewable Energy as Utility Costs Fall

Local | By Correspondent January 15, 2026

WILLEMSTAD — Curaçao’s utility company Aqualectra says the island is making rapid progress toward a more sustainable energy future, while residents are already benefiting from lower electricity and water prices.

According to Aqualectra’s latest Year in Review, the company expects that by 2027 more than 70 percent of Curaçao’s electricity will be generated from renewable sources. This marks a dramatic increase compared to previous years. In 2012, renewable energy accounted for just 9 percent of electricity production, rising to approximately 30 percent by 2024.

The expansion of renewable capacity is being driven mainly by wind and solar projects, supported by large-scale battery storage systems. Aqualectra states that this transition has significantly reduced the need for fossil fuels in electricity generation, directly impacting production costs and consumer tariffs.

The utility reports that electricity prices dropped by 6 percent in 2024, followed by a further reduction of nearly 11 percent in 2025. In addition, the price of tap water has also been lowered, easing the financial burden on households and businesses.

At the same time, Aqualectra continues to invest heavily in Curaçao’s energy infrastructure. Combined investments in 2024 and 2025 amount to hundreds of millions of guilders, aimed at strengthening the reliability and sustainability of the power and water networks. According to the company, these investments not only support the energy transition but also contribute to economic growth and job creation on the island.

Aqualectra emphasizes that the ongoing shift toward renewable energy is a long-term strategy designed to secure affordable, reliable and environmentally responsible utilities for Curaçao in the years ahead.
