Aruba: AVP Member of Parliament Benny Sevinger arrested for corruption

Local | By Correspondent May 26, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - Former minister and current Member of Parliament Benny Sevinger was arrested in Aruba this morning. As a minister, he is suspected of giving away government land to friendly relations between 2009 and 2017. In 2019, Sevinger's house was searched in connection with the case.

The arrest was not unexpected, the ANP writes. In recent weeks, almost ten people, including business owners, were arrested in Aruba in this so-called Avestruz case. Some people are still detained.

Sevinger is a member of the AVP. In 2019, Paul Croes, another AVP prominent, was sentenced to 4 years for selling work permits.

The leader of the AVP, former Prime Minister Mike Eman, has repeatedly called the Public Prosecution Service "partisan" several times in recent times. According to him, actions are always taken by the Public Prosecution Service against AVP members around election time. With this, the Public Prosecution Service would like to influence the voter, says Eman. Aruba has elections on June 25.
