Aruba develops its own BIG register

Local | By Correspondent October 20, 2021

ORANJESTAD - In Aruba it is now possible to work on the island via AZV insurance. An Aruban variant has been developed of the Dutch BIG Register, Arubig. BIG stands for professions in individual healthcare.

Healthcare providers must be registered in the BIG register before they can work. Healthcare providers could only work on Aruba if they were registered in the Dutch Big. Arubans who wanted to study medicine and wanted to come back to the island to work there, had to have completed their education in the Netherlands.

An investigation has shown that in 2030 there will be a shortage of doctors worldwide. Then it becomes even more difficult to get doctors to Aruba. With De Arubig, the government hopes to solve this problem. Aruba did not want to be dependent on the Dutch Big and has therefore set up its own variant.

Students studying medicines in the Netherlands, Canada, the United States, Costa Rica and Colombia can register with the Arubig. The registry clearly indicates what care providers can or cannot do.
