Aruba stops regular care to help Curaçao

Local | By Correspondent April 5, 2021

ORANJESTAD, WILLEMSTAD - The coronavirus continues to keep the world in its grip. The vaccination is delayed, meanwhile, business owners and the community are still sighing under the lockdown measures.

Hospital Aruba stops regular care

The only large hospital in Aruba almost completely stops with regular care, to be able to receive corona patients from Curaçao. In Curaçao, the pressure on healthcare is rising enormously due to an increase in the number of corona infections. The hospital in Curaçao is full and there is no more room in the intensive care unit.

The hospital in Aruba, the Dr. Horacio E. Oduber Hospital (HOH), currently only provides emergency care and oncological surgery. “As a country of solidarity, it has been decided to provide this assistance in healthcare and thus increase the capacity for Covid,” the hospital said.

As a result of this reduction of regular care, thirty extra Covid beds and six extra IC beds will become available in the HOH. Next week it will therefore have 62 Covid beds and 22 IC beds available.

There are already some Curaçao patients in the HOH hospital.
