Audit Finds Curaçao Lacks Effective Management of Government Buildings

Local | By Correspondent December 22, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao does not effectively manage its government-owned and rented buildings, according to a new audit by the General Audit Chamber of Curaçao. The report concludes that weaknesses in policy, registration systems, and maintenance practices expose the government to financial, safety, and operational risks.

The audit found that although the government uses dozens of rented buildings and owns hundreds of properties, there is no fully functioning system that provides reliable oversight of contracts, maintenance, or costs. As a result, rental agreements are often not properly registered, government-owned buildings are left unused or poorly maintained, and decision-makers lack accurate information when choosing between renting or using existing properties.

According to the Audit Chamber, these shortcomings increase the risk of unnecessary rental expenses, unplanned maintenance costs, and unsafe or unhealthy working conditions for civil servants. The report concludes that both administrative and technical management of government buildings fall short of basic standards for effective public asset management.
