Austerity measures affecting boarding schools reversed

Local | By Correspondent February 20, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - The three youth boarding schools that fall under the Guia Eduka foundation will not be cut back on their subsidy. The Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW) reversed the decision to cut 15% after an interview with employees yesterday.

In 2018 the government had already promised that they will not reduce the budget of these boarding schools. But at the beginning of this week, the government did announce that they are forced to reduce the budget of these boarding schools. Public finances do not allow the government to continue supporting these schools like it used to, said a representative of the Minister of Social Development.

But after a heavy protest, the minister of social development announced that he will reverse the decision especially to safeguard the care for the nearly 150 youngsters that reside at these boarding schools. Without the subsidy, these youngsters would definitely be helpless.
