Backlog of objections to tax authorities is not getting smaller

Local | By Correspondent May 20, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The stack of objections to taxes in Curaçao is high and is not getting smaller. This can be concluded from the new figures from the management report of the Tax Authorities.

The old ones are left behind, the newer objections are first picked up with the help of extra staff. Because the tax authorities are imposing more assessments than before, it is expected that more and more objections will be filed.

Many objections are administrative and concern incorrect assessments, for example, where the taxpayer has simply paid, but the tax authorities nevertheless send a payment reminder.

These must be handled within 90 days. Substantive objections, which an inspector must submit, have a statutory term of nine months. More than half of all objections are older than nine months.
