WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Economic Development will investigate the efficiency and effectiveness of the so-called basic food basket in the coming six months. Until then, the old regulation from 2012 will apply.
The larger basic food basket for consumers with low income, as wanted by Minister Cijntje, was rejected by the judge at the beginning of November. The old regulation from 2012 had already been withdrawn by then.
The Interest Association Curaçaosche Agenturen and 27 wholesale importer companies had taken the government of Curaçao to court to prevent the basic basket from being expanded with complete product groups and non-essential items.
The judge in preliminary relief proceedings accused the government of having made some investigation and proper weighing of interests since the introduction of the basic food basket in 2012.
The Interest Association indicated on 17 November that it has no objection to the revival of the Makutu Básiko Scheme 2012 for a limited period of six months.
