WILLEMSTAD - These days, a photo has been circulating on social media with new barriers at the Marriott hotel. Unknown people have attached signs with the text NO APARTHEID and below the text: BW 5 Art - 26, a reference to the Civil Code, book 5 article 26. That conscious article about the beaches of the sea and how the Curacao community deal with that.
Once again there is a discussion about the public nature of a beach in Curaçao. Baoase is only fresh in the memory, but not so fresh that the government would have learned from it. And certainly not Minister of Urban Planning Zita Jesus-Leito or one of her officials, as is now apparent in the case of the Marriott hotel.
The people are demanding these barriers to be removes so that they can have access to the beach. The Minister indicated that after a recalculation they discovered that the area belongs to the Marriot Hotel.
