Blue Bay Says Water Discoloration Is Natural and Poses No Health Risk

Local | By Correspondent January 16, 2026

WILLEMSTAD — The management of Blue Bay Curaçao has provided an update regarding recent concerns about the discoloration of seawater in the bay, reassuring residents and visitors that the situation is a natural, seasonal phenomenon and does not pose a health risk.

According to Blue Bay and the homeowners’ association (VvE), several questions and reports were received in recent weeks about brownish and greenish coloring of the water. After review, it was concluded that the discoloration is caused by a combination of natural factors, including wind direction, rainfall and limited natural water circulation within the bay.

Blue Bay emphasized that the change in water color is not the result of wastewater discharge, sewage leaks or human-caused pollution. Regular water quality monitoring is carried out, and at this time there are no indications of health risks for residents or guests.

To support natural water circulation and reduce the impact of the seasonal phenomenon, additional measures have already been implemented. These include the deployment of extra pumping capacity to improve water movement in the bay. In parallel, work is underway on a more structural and permanent solution aimed at further enhancing water circulation and limiting the recurrence of the issue as much as possible.

Blue Bay stated that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep stakeholders informed as further steps are taken.
