WILLEMSTAD - The Brakkeput boarding school cannot survive financially due to government cutbacks. Director Raymond Gericho confirms that the institution is in danger of closing.
"In 2018, the foundation subsidy was cut by 15 percent and in 2020 by another 35 percent, so a total of 50 percent," said Kees Wognum of the television program Duné un Chèns who came to the rescue for the boarding school.
Currently, 31 boys between the ages of 6 and 15 are being cared for in the boarding school. “When I was asked to become director, I set a condition, namely that I will not do this work to close the institution, but to keep it open. I don't believe in survival, but in life,” said the director.
