Booster shot for people over sixty from December 13th

WILLEMSTAD - People over sixty can go for the booster shot in Curaçao from December 13. Medical staff can also make an appointment for the booster from that date. Prime Minister Gilmar 'Pik' Pisas announced this during a press conference.

The booster vaccination is an additional injection against the coronavirus. The injection is intended as a boost that can improve the effect of the first vaccination series. A booster is necessary if the protective effect of the first vaccines decreases too much after a while. Or when the vaccinations appear to protect less well against new variants of the virus, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) writes.

According to Pisas, there is a good chance that eventually everyone aged eighteen and older can be vaccinated with the booster. The Prime Minister emphasizes that everyone should be aware of global developments.

"We really have to be careful with the new omicron variant of the virus," concludes epidemiologist Izzy Gerstenbluth. Earlier this week, the government announced that Curaçao has closed its borders with the South African countries. "There isn't enough information about the variant yet, so we can better be safe than sorry."
