Brain drain through bad economic situation

Local | By Correspondent May 10, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - There is a 'brain drain' on Curaçao. Many relatively young men and women who have completed an education leave the island. This is the opinion of PNP Member of Parliament Sheldry Osepa. He speaks of a disturbing development.

The Netherlands is a popular destination, but so is Bonaire. People mainly leave for better working conditions and a higher salary. Causes for the exodus include the poor financial situation on the island, high inflation and the fact that there is no new operator for the refinery. The Member of Parliament has asked fellow party member and Minister of Economic Development Ruisandro Cijntje to take measures. According to official statistics, 5,564 people left Curaçao in 2021.
