THE HAGUE - The Oranje Fonds has officially opened applications for the Appeltjes van Oranje 2026, calling on social initiatives that are working to achieve sustainable solutions to poverty. This year’s theme is “Breaking Poverty Together.” Organizations can apply from January 12 through February 22 via the Oranje Fonds website. Three winning initiatives will be honored in October, with the awards presented by Queen Máxima.

Poverty Remains a Persistent Challenge in the Caribbean
Poverty continues to be a deeply rooted problem across the Caribbean, with far-reaching consequences for health, opportunity, and social participation. Approximately one in three residents in the Caribbean lives in poverty, according to figures cited by the Oranje Fonds. Existing poverty policies are often complex or insufficient, leaving many people without the support they need.
As a result, community-based social initiatives play a crucial role in both reducing and preventing poverty. These organizations operate close to the people they serve, have their trust, and are able to offer practical and targeted support where it is most needed.
Focus on Sustainable Solutions
For the 2026 edition of the Appeltjes van Oranje, the Oranje Fonds is specifically looking for organizations that help break cycles of poverty and debt in a sustainable way. Priority will be given to initiatives that empower people with knowledge and skills, enabling them to improve their own circumstances in the long term.
A key selection criterion is that participating organizations actively work to prevent or reduce poverty, encourage open dialogue about poverty, promote a more realistic and honest understanding of the issue, and demonstrate what is possible when people receive the right support.
Recognition for Social Organizations Is Essential
Sandra Jetten, Director of the Oranje Fonds, emphasized the importance of this year’s theme. “Once again, we have chosen a socially urgent issue,” she said. “Initiatives that work to prevent and reduce poverty deserve recognition for the vital work they do. They are indispensable in tackling a persistent problem that affects far too many people.”
According to Jetten, the awards aim to highlight the expertise of these organizations and underscore that their knowledge should be fully utilized. “They deserve an equal seat at the table alongside governments and official institutions. Together, we can truly make a difference,” she said.
