WILLEMSTAD - Burney Fonseca is back in Curaçao. The 50-year-old man who was the logistic mastermind of the murder of the popular politician and Member of Parliament Helmin Wiels was held in a prison in Middelburg, the Netherlands, but has been transferred to the SDKK prison in Koraal Specht.
Fonseca was sentenced to 26 years in prison in 2018 after cassation and served his sentence in the Netherlands because of his safety.
The policy of the Public Prosecution Service is that prisoners serve their sentences in the country where the crime was committed. The Court has so far refused to comply with that wish.
It must be concluded from his transfer that security can now be guaranteed or that the threat analysis now gives a different result.
