Cabinet Rhuggenaath under pressure

Local | By Correspondent July 20, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - The Rhuggenaath cabinet is in serious trouble, now that Rennox Calmes MP has left the party Pin and continues as an independent Member of Parliament. Rennox did indicate to Prime Minister Rhuggenaath that he would continue to support the coalition.

Because of his resignation, the position of PIN minister Suzanne Camelia-Römer also became untenable. She indicated that she would tender her resignation to the governor today, but that has not happened yet. According to unconfirmed sources, the parties PAR and MAN have asked Camelia-Römer to remain as minister for at least another week.

The coalition still relies on PAR and MAN, with 10 seats, which is the same number of seats as the opposition. The eleventh seat belongs to former PAR minister Marilyn Alcalá-Wallé.

She is unclear about her position within the faction because a criminal investigation is ongoing against her. She has not heard yet from the Public Prosecution (OM).

This weekend, a new document entitled "Wellness scam Curacao" circulated on social media, again revealing dubious practices of the minister and her husband, plagued by numerous scandals and reports. Although the source and date are not known, it seems to be a (draft) declaration or incitement to questions in parliament. More about this document will be published this week.
