Celebrating micro, small, and medium enterprises in Curaçao: empowering entrepreneurs for economic growth

Local | By Press release June 26, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - On the day dedicated to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), observed annually on June 27th, the United Nations recognizes and celebrates these vital businesses. In Curaçao, it is undeniable that the MSME sector has long been the driving force behind our economy. Comprising an impressive 98% of all businesses on the island, these enterprises contribute significantly, providing employment opportunities for 60% of our workforce.

Globally, MSMEs hold immense potential to bring about transformative changes in the global economy, fostering job creation and facilitating economic growth. It is crucial that these entrepreneurs receive the necessary support and assistance to thrive. Recognizing the importance of this day, the Ministry of Economic Development (MEO) emphasizes its commitment to address the needs and challenges faced by local entrepreneurs who tirelessly contribute to the economic development of our nation.

Two years after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many entrepreneurs in the MSME sector continue to face daily struggles to safeguard their dreams. MEO acknowledges the vital role of the government in reaching out to these entrepreneurs, understanding their needs, and empathizing with their daily experiences. As part of these efforts, Minister Cijntje, in collaboration with MEO, launched the "Orea pa Empresario" project on June 17th in Hòfi Popo Rojer, bringing together local entrepreneurs from Bándabou and neighboring areas. "Orea pa Empresario" aims to provide enhanced support and assistance to the micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise sector in Curaçao.

By personally engaging with entrepreneurs, actively listening to their ideas, addressing areas for improvement, and engaging in meaningful conversations with local business owners from different neighborhoods, the ministry gains valuable insights to further strengthen and develop the sector. To continue this dialogue, Minister Cijntje and the MEO team invite all entrepreneurs to join them on Tuesday, June 27th, at the Freedom Hotel in Otrobanda from 6 PM to 8 PM for the upcoming edition of "Orea pa Empresario." Participation in this session is free of charge, and all entrepreneurs in the neighborhood are warmly welcomed.

Furthermore, in addition to the "Orea pa Empresario" project, MEO is actively working on launching "Mi NEGOSHI Shared Services." This initiative aims to provide even better services to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises by establishing a physical contact point where entrepreneurs can access coaching and guidance tailored to their specific needs.
