Census 2022 starts

Local | By Correspondent November 9, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) announces the start of the 2022 census. This time, the data will be obtained and processed online and digitally as much as possible.

The research period is from November 11 to January 23, 2022. Families in 5,000 homes will then be questioned. The Census is held every ten years and provides important demographic data that is used for all kinds of analysis by both government and business.

According to the CBS, it is the second time that the census has been done for just Curaçao, since the abolition of the Netherlands Antilles. The first census was in 2011. The census for next year will be organized entirely digitally, which means a major organizational change, as was explained during a recent press conference.

The questionnaire will be administered digitally, both online, via community centers and by telephone. This makes the quality of the data more accurate. “In addition, processing the data is made easier.” A letter will be delivered to all addresses in Curaçao with the request to participate in the research and to visit the website (senso.cbs.cw).

The questionnaire can be accessed with a specific number stated on the letter. Further instructions are provided on the website on how to complete the questionnaire. If the questionnaire cannot be completed in one go, the questionnaire can still be completed after closing and entering the access number again.

If a home does not have access to the internet, the telephone number 724-2227 can be called to make an appointment to complete the questionnaire with an employee of the CBS. From November 20, people can visit three community centers, namely Wishi/Marchena, Soto and Montaña from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. A third possibility is that the questionnaire is completed by telephone contact. Finally, there is also the possibility that a surveyor makes a home visit to complete the questionnaire.

The questions are about the house and the facilities in the house such as kitchen, number of bedrooms and bathroom. It also asks about the number of people living there, whether there are pets, the energy consumption and whether the house is rented or owned. There are also questions related to health, education, working conditions, access to media, transport, access to water and electricity and nuisance caused by vermin.

All persons who have lived on Curaçao for more than a year or less, but who can prove that they have resided on the island for more than a year (including navy officers and interns), are included in the Census. All residents of the homes must complete the questionnaire, including people who temporarily stay in the home.
