WILLEMSTAD - Charelson ‘Sontje’ Mercelina has been crowned the new Tumba King after winning this year’s Tumba Festival with the song Awe ta mi so ku bo (Today I Am Alone with You). The winning composition was written by Ike Jesurun, a three-time Tumba King to whom this year’s festival was dedicated, with the arrangement by Angelo Dopwell.
At just 20 years old, Mercelina’s victory marks a significant milestone in his musical journey. He previously claimed the title of children’s tumba winner in 2019, and seven years later has now secured the top prize in the adult competition. During his winning performance, Mercelina was musically accompanied by the band ERA.

Second place went to Dibo D with the song Paña Kompañami. In addition to finishing as runner-up, Dibo D also received the Bèti Doran Prize, awarded to the tumba judged to have the strongest lyrics. The prize is named after his grandfather, Bèti Doran.
Michelangelo 'MJ' Martina secured third place with Awe SI!, while Raynor 'Raey' Lauffer finished fourth with Ariba tur Nashon. Last year’s winner, Jefdaney 'J’Dey' M’ Manuela, placed fifth with Kabes riba Awa.
The annual Tumba Festival is organized by AMAK, the association of musicians and artists. Traditionally, the winning song becomes the most frequently played tumba during the Carnival season and serves as the rhythm to which Carnival groups dance as they make their way through the streets during the parades.
With Awe ta mi so ku bo claiming the top spot, Mercelina’s song is now expected to set the musical tone for Carnival 2026, echoing across Curaçao as festivities continue in the weeks ahead.
