WILLEMSTAD - Care professionals in Curaçao can participate in a course on child abuse at the end of this year. The two-day course consists of lectures, exercises and scenario and communication training.
The course was created thanks to a collaboration between the Dutch Foundation for Emergency Aid for Children (SHK), the Dutch Caribbean Foundation for Clinical Higher Education (Nashko) and the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC).
According to Nashko, child abuse and sexual abuse are a common problem. Early identification of child abuse is essential to limit the short- and long-term consequences. “Healthcare professionals have the task of recognizing these signals and acting on them.”
The course is taught by pediatricians specializing in social pediatrics, a forensic physician and a communication trainer. The aim is to train healthcare professionals in recognizing child abuse and acting in the event of (suspected) child abuse.
The course is on November 28 and 29 and December 1 and 2 in the auditorium of the CMC.
