AMSTERDAM - Churandy Martina will participate in the FBK Games for the fourteenth time on June 6. The 36-year-old sprinter wants to run the Olympic limit on the 200 meters in Hengelo and thus qualify for the Games in Tokyo.
"I have experienced everything here in that nice, fresh Dutch weather. I once saw the roof almost blow away, I saw a lot of umbrellas and was once so sick that I was vomiting before the match," said the Curaçao athlete, who also had a sporting highlight in Hengelo: in 2009 he was the first athlete ever on Dutch soil to run under 10 seconds in 100 meters (9.97).
Churandy will experience its fifth and final Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer. He not only wants to run the relay (4x100 meters), but also individually finish the 200 meters. However, he has not yet qualified for the latter part.
"I can probably participate based on my points in the world rankings, but I would rather run the limit. I am no different from the previous times; I am still going for a final place and a medal. If I have the feeling that it is not possible, then I will not participate."
