Local | By Press release February 10, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - The identity of the Curaçao community lies in the diversity and unity that manifest itself in every aspect of life here in our community.

Jean, through her iconic pieces of art, has enriched our culture with art that depicts our daily life but in her own unique way.

Visitors to Passaat Alley in the heart of Punda will notice a transformation taking place towards an authentic art alleyway. Her murals, decorating the walls of the historic buildings, was combined with urban gardening to create a one-of-a-kind ambiance and cultural experience.  CIBC FirstCaribbean is honored to support Jean Girigori in this endeavor as it not only contributes to enriching downtown with another spot to truly experience the essence of our community but also enhances the tourism product Curaçao has to offer.

“We at CIBC FirstCaribbean acknowledge the great contribution of Jean Girigori to our cultural heritage.  The initiative to develop the alley where her shop is located into a cultural experience, during this pandemic and economic peril, is commendable and serve as an example to all of us.  We are honored to be able to contribute to make this a reality and invite the community, and tourists, to come and discover this unique space in the heart of Punda,” said Timba Engelhardt CIBC FirstCaribbean’s Country Head in Curaçao.

The Caribbean artist Jean Girigori, a true cultural ambassador of Curaçao, is known for her colorful paintings, that represent the Caribbean culture.  Jean is not only known in Curaçao but also the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States.

Her zeal to persevere is something striking and contagious.  Downtown Punda suffered heavily due to the absence of tourism because of the Covid-19 pandemic.  Jean’s atelier located in the Passaat alley also took a blow.  This did not prevent her from using her to do what she best does, creating works of art.

She took the initiative and worked to convert the alley into a cultural experience.  The freshly painted area, showcasing the art of Jean Girigori, combined with an authentic local urban garden will be a valuable addition to the Curaçao tourism product as soon the tourists return to the island and downtown Punda.
