Classical music from Amsterdam Zuidoost: 'The Curaçao Chopin, that is also Dutch history'

Local | By Correspondent August 22, 2022

AMSTERDAM - In a concert series that is part of the exhibition Tussen Gaasp en Gracht, classical musicians from Southeast are central. "The canals are the legacy of colonial history and the artists are too," writes Britt van Klaveren in the Duth newspaper Het Parool.

The exhibition is a multidisciplinary project by Museum Van Loon and Imagine IC in collaboration with the Open Space Contemporary Art Museum and New Metropolis Zuidoost. Orville Breeveld put together the accompanying series of classical concerts, which take place in the garden of Museum Van Loon. “I could have filled thirty days. Amsterdam has gold in its hands.”

“Artists from Zuidoost are often not linked to the classical school,” says Breeveld. “We know the hip-hop from Southeast and it's great, but the classical music from Southeast deserves at least as much attention.”

There is a diverse palette of artists on stage, all with a personal connection to Zuidoost. The relatively unknown classical music of these musicians runs parallel to the untold history on which the exhibition focuses.

Breeveld: “Alexander Kraft van Ermel will play music by his grandfather from Curaçao, Wim Statius Muller, the Curaçao Chopin, on the opening night. That's what we want right? That is also Dutch history, it is inextricably linked, but we do not know it. And what you don't know, you can't love."
