Cleaning Sargassum will start soon

Local | By Correspondent March 3, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN) is preparing to remove the washed-up Sargassum. Currently, several bays on the north and west coasts are experiencing a lot of nuisances from the seaweed.

Boka Asencion and St. Joris Bay in particular are flooded with Sargassum every year. The cleaning of these two bays is now part of the regular work of the ministry. These beaches are cleaned twice a year.

Rotting Sargassum causes stench. In addition, it is harmful to marine animals. Sea turtles can get entangled in the seaweed. That is why there are various organizations that help with the cleaning of the bays, such as Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao and Stichting Uniek Curaçao.

More Sargassum is expected to float this way. The GMN Ministry is monitoring the situation before proceeding with the cleaning of the bays. The ministry will engage an external company for this.
