WILLEMSTAD - Travel agency Corendon is building a large resort next to the so-called Rif area in Otrobanda. That is why the Curaçao government must start cleaning up the area in the short term, where many mangroves are growing.
According to Wimbert Hato, Member of Parliament for the coalition party MAN, cleaning up the area makes no sense if the cause of the problem is not addressed. “To prevent overflow in the mangrove area, the pumping station must be renewed. The pipes that run to Klein Hofje, the water treatment plant, must be repaired. A budget has been set aside for this since 2018. However, nothing has happened to this day. "
With the arrival of the second Mega Pier, developments have started in the Rif area. According to Caroline Härtel, general manager of the new resort of travel company Corendon, all plans have been accelerated since the arrival of Corendon and the construction of a new hospital across the street. But cleaning up the area is and remains the responsibility of the local government, Härtel emphasizes.
