WILLEMSTAD – Climate change and its risks for Curaçao were the central topics during a visit to the Governor of Curaçao, Mauritsz de Kort, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
The visit was made by Albert Martis, Director of the Meteorological Service of Curaçao and Permanent Representative of Curaçao to the World Meteorological Organization, together with Miriam Jonker, Policy Director at the Ministry of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning (VVRP).

During the meeting, discussions focused on the risks that climate change poses to Curaçao and the need for a comprehensive policy framework to address these challenges. Particular attention was given to the 2025 assessment conducted by the Meteorological Service on the impacts of climate change on the island, as well as a draft report currently being developed to establish a national policy framework on climate change for Curaçao.
The meeting underscored the growing urgency of climate adaptation and mitigation measures and highlighted the importance of coordinated policy planning to safeguard the island’s future in the face of increasing climate-related risks.
