Coalition parties disagree on Curaçao as a hub for humanitarian aid to Venezuela

Local | By Correspondent February 18, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - In a written statement, the coalition partner MAN indicated that it continues to regard Curaçao as a peace zone, just as has always been the case in the past. This contrasts with its main coalition partner PAR.

The blue party reacted with astonishment on the statements from the Dutch minister Stef Blok from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs saying that Curaçao will act as a hub for humanitarian aid to Venezuela.

MAN says it was surprised because no official request has been received by parliament. The MAN states that he does not understand why Curaçao now must take a different position than that of a 'peace zone'.

“Under no circumstances can the Curaçao community fall victim to geopolitical actions, whereby local authorities have no influence whatsoever on the developments."

The party considers the Venezuelan population to be a good neighbor; the party expresses sympathy in this context for the tough times that the country and its people face. "The MAN is pro humanitarian aid. We believe, however, that this assistance should be provided under the current circumstances by international organizations specifically responsible for such missions, such as the United Nations and the Red Cross.
