Coastguard and Police intercept drugs on Curaçao

Local | By Press release November 3, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The Coast Guard spotted a suspicious contact at sea near Curaçao last Sunday morning. After detection, the Maritime Operation Center of the Coast Guard directed a Coast Guard unit towards the suspicious vessel and also immediately informed the Curaçao Police Force.

Once on location, the police saw both a suspicious vessel and a suspicious car. After spotting the suspicious car, the Police immediately went to the location where it was, but the people in the car had already fled. In the area where the car was parked, the Police and Coast Guard found various packages with suspected narcotics. The Coast Guard aircraft was also deployed to search for the vessel. In total, 22 drug packages containing a total of 713 kilos of drugs, of which 43 kilos of marijuana and 670 kilos of cocaine, were found in the 'mondi' and in the water. In the area, the Coast Guard found a sunken boat that was probably used for drug transport. The Curaçao Police Force has seized the drug packages and is investigating the matter further. The drugs have since been destroyed.

The Coast Guard will continue to intensify its checks at sea in the coming period. These checks are aimed at guarding the borders against illegal drug transport, illegal migration, human trafficking and firearms smuggling. In order to optimally monitor our territorial waters and coastline, the Coast Guard also requests the help of the citizens. As alert citizens, they can inform the Coast Guard if they observe suspicious or dangerous situations at sea. The Coast Guard can be reached day and night via the number 913 or via whatsapp 510 0913.
