ORANJESTAD - Soon, the Caribbean Coast Guard will carry out more checks on illegal fishing with harpoon guns in Aruba.
Since November 2020 there is a tolerance policy that has legalized the use of harpoons. However, there are rules that spearfishers must adhere to.
There are signs of widespread non-compliance with these rules. The Coast Guard regularly encounters people at sea who are spearfishing without a permit.
The Coast Guard reminds everyone that it is forbidden to spearfish in the red zone on the map. It is also prohibited in this area to be in possession of a harpoon.
