Coastguard wants to fine boats Fuikdag

Local | By Correspondent January 10, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The Coast Guard is in consultation with the Public Prosecution Service (OM) about the possibilities to fine the boats that were present in Fuikbaai on Sunday. Despite the corona measures and prior warnings from both the police and the coast guard, boat parties were held in the bay.

Due to the increasing number of corona infections, it is not allowed to come together with boats or to moor at a pier. In addition, only half of the usual number of passengers are allowed on board and only background music is allowed. Coast Guard spokeswoman Shalick Clement is not happy about the huge crowds that gathered on Sunday to party in the bay. “This is really unacceptable, there will be consequences for this.”

In addition to the Coast Guard, the police also issued a warning on Sunday. “The rules that have been taken by the government to reduce the number of infections also apply at sea,” emphasized the Curaçao Police Force (KPC). According to Clement, it was not responsible for employees of the Coast Guard to intervene because of the crowds.

Based on the photos and videos circulating on social media, the Coast Guard can find out which boats were present on the so-called Fuikdag. Discussions are currently being held with the Public Prosecution Service whether these boats will still be penalized.
