Community Outrage After Fresh Illegal Dumping at St. Joris Sparks Calls for Enforcement

Local | By Correspondent December 11, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Residents are expressing frustration and disbelief after large amounts of rubbish were once again dumped in the natural area of St. Joris, despite the government placing extra waste containers in Bandariba over the weekend to prevent exactly this kind of behavior.

Images and messages circulating on social media show piles of trash discarded in the countryside, prompting community members to ask: “When will people finally start respecting the law?” Critics note that reaching the official waste containers in Bandariba would have been easier than driving out to St. Joris to dump illegally.

Authorities recently installed additional bins across neighborhoods to make proper disposal more accessible, and landfill services remain fully operational. Despite these efforts, illegal dumping continues unabated.

Local organizations and government agencies have been investing significant resources in keeping Curaçao clean, yet a small group of offenders—described by residents as acting “without scruples”—continues to pollute natural areas without consequence.

Community leaders are urging citizens to report illegal dumping immediately and call for strict enforcement of environmental laws. Many argue that the time has come for harsh penalties to finally be applied in practice.

A clean island benefits us all,” one resident wrote, emphasizing the shared responsibility to protect Curaçao’s natural beauty.
