Constancia seeks compensation from oil platform

Local | By Correspondent November 4, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - Member of Parliament for the opposition party MFK Jacinta Constancia believes that oil platform CIMC Gretha should pay compensation of 350,000 euros to Curaçao. For this, the government must do everything to make that happen, she says in a statement.

Since last year, the oil platform was in the bay near Boca Sami, but it left suddenly last week.

On October 24, 2020, the Dutch research platform Follow the Money published an investigation report about the Gretha. It shows that the oil platform drifted during a storm over a year ago and shattered the coral reef in the bay.

Constancia has indicated that part of the reef has been irreparably damaged. According to the Curacao research institute Caramabi, the economic damage amounts to more than 350 thousand euros.

Several questions have also been asked about the matter in the Dutch parliament. Constancia now wants Minister Zita Jesus-Leito of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning to go to Court to place a lien on the oil platform.

According to the minister, an investigation into the damage to the coral has not yet been completed.
