Consumers association: Astronomical price differences for alcohol

Local | By Correspondent November 24, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - A study by consumers association Fundashon pa Konsumidó shows that Bon Biní Supermarket is the cheapest supermarket on the island. In October, the association conducted an investigation into price differences in Curaçao stores and supermarkets.

The prices were compared for a total of 174 products at 22 locations. That happened from 22 to 27 October. These include canned vegetables and vegetables in jars, rice, pasta, flour, oil, sugar, tea, coffee, cornflakes, milk, juice, soft drinks, soap, tea, coffee, cleaning products, toilet paper, beer and other alcoholic drinks.

The aim was to provide an overview of the prices on the market and at the same time stimulate the consumer to buy consciously and responsibly. This does not take into account quality, nor the country of origin of the products.

Bon Biní emerged from the research as the supermarket where the prices were the lowest of all the products examined. Mangusa Supermarket came second in the comparison.

The difference in prices for alcohol was remarkable. The Consumers Association speaks of astronomical price differences. For example, a 12-year-old bottle of Dewars whiskey at Exito Supermarket costs Naf 44.95 and at Esperamos Supermarket the same bottle costs Naf 89.25.

A 75 ml bottle of Old Parr whiskey costs Naf 86.60 at Arco Iris Supermarket and Naf 51.75 at Best Buy Supermarket.

A 75 ml bottle of Gray Goose vodka costs Naf 60 at Arti's Supermarket and Naf 92.7 at Esperamos. That is a price difference of Naf 32.70.

The Consumers' Association calls the price differences remarkable and calls on people to use their money wisely.
