Controversy Over Proposed Raise for Aqualectra Supervisory Board Sparks Media Attention

Local | By Correspondent May 26, 2025

WILLEMSTAD A letter from SBTNO (the Foundation for Supervision and Standardization of Government Entities) to Minister of Economic Development Charles Cooper has stirred public debate regarding a proposed increase in compensation for the Supervisory Board of Aqualectra.

Earlier this year, members of the board indicated that it would be possible to raise their monthly remuneration from the current NAf 1,000 to a maximum of NAf 3,700. However, the board did not submit a formal request for a specific raise, a point that has drawn attention in recent days.

SBTNO responded in a letter dated April 2, inviting the commissioners to justify their position and provide a detailed motivation for the proposed adjustment.

The Supervisory Board in question is officially affiliated with Integrated Utility Holding, the parent company of Aqualectra. The SBTNO, which oversees governance standards for public entities, emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in such decisions.

Although the letter dates back several weeks, its contents have only now gained broader media traction, prompting questions over public sector compensation and oversight.
