Corona support not transferred on time by the ministry

Local | By Correspondent November 5, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW) has not been able to transfer the corona support on time to the citizens of Curaçao who are eligible for the financial aid. It concerns a total amount of about three million guilders in monthly support.

SOAW provides Covid support to more than 11,000 citizens. The benefit consists of food cards and a basic income for the short-term unemployed. In addition, food packages and hot meals are also provided. At the end of October, Minister Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia announced that the corona support will end as of 2022.

The Council of Ministers has come up with a proposal to phase out the aid. From January there will be no more aid. “We are currently looking at how the project can be completed until the end of the year,” said Minister Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia. Funding until the end of December has now been made available.

In total, the project cost seventy million guilders. “It will be very difficult to get such a sum of money again next year,” emphasizes Secretary-General Etienne Van der Horst.

During the same press conference it was announced that citizens would receive their money in the first week of November. According to the ministry, an attempt is being made to transfer the money tomorrow. If this fails, the money will be deposited by Tuesday at the latest.
