Crime in Curaçao decreased due to corona measures

Local | By Correspondent January 8, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - Far fewer crimes were committed on Curaçao in 2020 than in the years before. Justice Minister Quincy Girigorie said this is a direct result of the various corona measures, such as the imposition of a curfew. Last year, thirteen murders were committed on the island. In 2018 there were 21 and in 2017 it was 27.

The number of armed robberies has also decreased significantly. More than 400 armed robberies were committed in 2019, compared to 270 in 2020. The number of burglaries has decreased by almost 20 percent and the number of car burglaries by 60 percent.

However, more cases of relational violence have been recorded. In 2019 there were 120 reports, in 2020 there were 190. According to Girigorie, this is also a result of the corona measures. People were more often at home, forced or otherwise. According to the minister, in some cases this led to relational violence.
