Curaçao airspace remains open despite heightened alert, government clarifies

Local | By Correspondent January 3, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The airspace above Curaçao remains open to air traffic for the time being. The government of Curaçao has issued a clarification correcting earlier reports suggesting that the island’s airspace might be closed. While flights are still permitted, authorities confirmed that a heightened state of alert is currently in effect.

According to the government, U.S. authorities have prohibited American airlines from entering the airspace in the region. This restriction does not apply to non-U.S. carriers, such as KLM. However, several non-American airlines have independently decided not to operate flights today as a precautionary measure.

The restriction imposed by U.S. authorities is expected to remain in force at least through January 3. The Curaçao government emphasized that the situation is being closely monitored in coordination with relevant partners and aviation authorities.

Residents and travelers are urged to rely on official government communication channels for accurate and up-to-date information, as developments in the region continue to evolve rapidly.
