Curaçao Allocates Over Six Million Guilders to Sports in 2025 as Trai Seru Project Faces Higher Costs and Delays

Local | By Correspondent January 12, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Government of Curaçao has allocated more than six million guilders for sports and physical activity in 2025, according to ministerial decrees from the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport that have been submitted to Parliament. The documents also reveal that the development of the Trai Seru sports park, which includes the construction of an international Little League field, is facing cost overruns and delays.

The largest share of the funding, amounting to 6,090,900 guilders, has been allocated to Fundashon Desaroyo Deportivo Kòrsou. The subsidy will be used to finance a wide range of activities, including school sports programs, school swimming lessons, sports initiatives in neighborhoods and boarding facilities, sports for people with disabilities, and the management and maintenance of sports facilities across the island.

Operational expenses such as water and electricity costs, as well as general maintenance of sports infrastructure, are also covered under the subsidy. The funding applies to the entire year of 2025 and is subject to extensive reporting and oversight requirements.

Rising Costs at Trai Seru Sports Park

The same parliamentary documents address the progress of the Trai Seru sports park project. An initial budget of four million guilders was made available, of which approximately 1.2 million guilders has already been spent. These funds were used for demolition work, materials, preparatory construction activities and consultancy costs.

During the execution phase, the condition of existing structures was found to be worse than anticipated. As a result, the project scope was expanded to include more extensive renovations. To complete the sports park, an additional two million guilders is now required. This funding is intended for a more durable roof, new grandstands that meet international standards, improved lighting, a modern scoreboard and an upgraded sound system.

According to the current planning, the Trai Seru complex is expected to be fully completed and accessible by the end of March 2026.

Additional Support for Sports Federations

In addition to the subsidy for FDDK, the ministry has allocated 1.25 million guilders to Federashon Deporte i Olimpiko Kòrsou. This funding is aimed at supporting sports federations, international competition participation, capacity building and the development of elite sports.

Together, the allocations underline that sports and physical activity remain structural policy priorities for the Curaçao government. At the same time, major infrastructure projects such as Trai Seru continue to place financial and organizational pressure on the overall sports budget.
