Curaçao and Colombia Establish Interparliamentary Friendship Commission

Local | By Correspondent January 13, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao and Colombia are taking a new step in strengthening their bilateral relations with the creation of an interparliamentary friendship commission. The Congress of the Republic of Colombia has decided to establish a permanent friendship group with the Parliament of Curaçao, a decision that was formally communicated by the Curaçao government to the States earlier this month.

The initiative is anchored in a resolution adopted by the Colombian Congress on November 11, 2025. The commission is intended to deepen and formalize political dialogue and cooperation between the two parliaments. A key objective is the exchange of knowledge and experience in areas such as legislation, democratic institutions, and broader social and governance issues.

According to the accompanying documentation, Colombia views Curaçao as an important partner in the Caribbean region. This assessment is based on longstanding historical, cultural, and economic ties, as well as the presence of a significant Colombian community on the island and the steady flow of Colombian visitors to Curaçao.

The friendship commission is also expected to improve coordination on regional developments and encourage closer cooperation within the wider Caribbean and Latin American context. By creating a structured platform for regular contact, both parliaments aim to explore joint initiatives and strengthen mutual understanding.

With the establishment of this commission, relations between Curaçao and Colombia gain a more formal and institutional character at the parliamentary level, signaling an intention on both sides to invest in sustained political engagement and regional collaboration.
