Curaçao Bar Association Urges Parliament to Vote on New Attorneys Ordinance

Local | By Correspondent December 8, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Bar Association has called on Parliament to bring the new National Ordinance on Attorneys to a vote in the near future. The request was made in a letter from the dean, Jänsch, to the States of Curaçao, who stated that sufficient support for the law’s introduction now exists.

The proposed Attorneys Ordinance has been discussed repeatedly over the past several years. On September 6, 2024, the board of the Bar Association provided a technical briefing on the proposal to Parliament’s Central Committee.

Following that session, attorneys Eldon Sulvaran and Chester Peterson presented their views on the draft legislation. In May of this year, Jänsch and Sulvaran confirmed via email that they are in agreement on the content of the proposal and see no remaining obstacles to its implementation.

On May 23, the Bar Association organized a town hall meeting for attorneys and members of the Council of Supervision of the Legal Profession. No objections to the draft were raised during that meeting. According to the association, no objections were raised either at the general members’ meeting held on June 18.

The Bar Association argues that the new law is essential for safeguarding the quality and integrity of the legal profession in Curaçao. The dean has therefore urged Parliament to proceed with consideration of the current draft, including the latest Memorandum of Amendment, and to move it forward to a vote.
