WILLEMSTAD - So-called support elections will be held on Curaçao this weekend. These elections are taking place with strict measures due to the corona pandemic. For example, gatherings are strictly prohibited.
20,000 red pencils were bought for the elections so that each voter gets his own pencil. The Electoral Council announced this yesterday.
In elections on the island, it is common for supporters to accompany the political leaders when they vote. However, according to Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Electoral Council Charles do Rego, the police will now intervene immediately if people do not obey the rules and gather in groups.
A record number of 16 parties are participating in the support elections. These sixteen new political parties must obtain at least 789 support votes to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections on March 19. To this end, fourteen polling stations will open on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 January.
Seven parties that were elected to parliament four years ago are automatically allowed to compete for the 21 parliamentary seats.
