Local | By Correspondent January 5, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Fire Department responded to a total of 28 incidents during the New Year’s period, with emergency services active from 7:00 a.m. on December 31 until 7:00 a.m. on January 1.

According to the fire service, the incidents ranged from minor situations to more serious emergencies. One of the more significant cases occurred in Westpunt, where an unoccupied wooden house caught fire. Firefighters were able to respond quickly and bring the blaze under control.

Fireworks behind most incidents

A large number of the incidents were linked to the careless use of fireworks. In several cases, fireworks landed on flammable materials, sparking fires that required intervention by emergency crews.

The fire department issued a strong appeal to residents to strictly observe fire safety regulations. “A small moment of carelessness or negligence can lead to major damage, not only to property but also to human life,” the department warned.

Increased focus on prevention in 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, the Curaçao Fire Department said it will place greater emphasis on fire prevention. The service plans to intensify its presence in various neighborhoods across the island.

Firefighters will also organize informational sessions at schools, community organizations, and directly with residents. These sessions will provide practical guidance on fire prevention, how to act in emergency situations, and the proper use of basic safety equipment.

The fire department’s motto for the year is “Prevention, the best option,” and it is calling on all citizens to cooperate in making Curaçao a safer place for everyone.
