Curaçao Government Launches ‘Ami ta Prepará’ to Build a More Prepared and Resilient Society

Local | By Correspondent January 6, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Government of Curaçao has launched a new public awareness initiative titled Ami ta Prepará (“I Am Prepared”), aimed at strengthening the island’s resilience, safety, and overall preparedness. The program focuses on informing, preparing, and activating the community so residents are better equipped to deal with risks, crises, and emergencies.

According to Curaçao’s updated risk profile for 2023–2028, the island may face as many as 35 different types of risks. These include natural and technological hazards, as well as social, digital, and geopolitical developments. While not every serious incident immediately becomes a crisis, the government stresses that proper preparation is essential. Clear procedures and effective action can make a critical difference when incidents occur.

With Ami ta Prepará, the focus shifts from reacting after a crisis has already happened to being prepared in advance. The core objective is to promote self-reliance among residents during emergencies, allowing first responders to prioritize the most vulnerable groups. The government emphasizes that everyone who is able should know how to protect themselves, their families, and their immediate surroundings.

The initiative supports this goal by providing practical information through various media channels. Residents are encouraged to take simple but important steps, such as learning emergency phone numbers, assembling an emergency kit, creating a family action plan, and thinking ahead about how neighbors can support one another in times of need. To ensure broad accessibility, all information will be made available in four languages.

The government underlines that Ami ta Prepará is not a warning of imminent danger. There is no immediate threat at this time. Instead, the initiative is designed to foster calm, confidence, and practical awareness. By increasing preparedness, the program aims to help build a society that is safer, more resilient, and better informed.

The long-term ambition is for Ami ta Prepará to become part of Curaçao’s culture and daily habits. Crises do not announce when or how they will occur, or even if they will occur at all. For that reason, the government is starting this year with a structural effort to raise awareness within the community and intends to continue this effort in the years ahead.

Ami ta Prepará was developed as part of the Strategic Plan for Risk and Crisis Communication 2025–2030 and serves as the practical implementation of government policy in this area. The initiative was created in collaboration with several partners, including the Veiligheidsdienst Curaçao, the Directie Risicobeheersing & Rampenbeleid, and the Crisisbeheersings & Rampenbestrijdingsorganisatie, and aligns with the broader safety strategy within the Kingdom.

Residents can find basic information at amitaprepara.cw. Over time, additional content will be added until all 35 identified risks in the national risk profile are covered. The government encourages the public to follow its official communication channels for updates and further information on Ami ta Prepará.
